Besides teacher training, no group experience has had a more powerful impact on my life than 40 Days to Personal Revolution. I had the opportunity to go through two different cycles of it at Shakti Power Yoga, and this month, I’ll have the opportunity to lead a group at Hot Yoga Plus. I’ve been getting a lot of emails of students who want more information on it, so I compiled an FAQ here. If I’ve missed something, please let me know in the comments and I’ll be happy to clarify.
What is 40 Days to Personal Revolution?
It’s a flexible, 40-day lifestyle program by Baron Baptiste, an American yoga teacher and author. We follow the program outlined in his book by the same name. The program has several components: yoga practice, diet, meditation, reading, journaling, and group discussion.
Flexible, huh? How so?
It is what you make of it. For some, “staying close to the program” is going to make sense. For those really looking for a reset in their life, then it will benefit you to go by the book. For others, bite-sized adjustments may be what the doctor ordered. For example, if you know you’ll be traveling a few weeks, it’s ok to miss a meeting or two (just let us know so we don’t worry about you!). I was pregnant the second time I participated, so I wasn’t able to do the fruit fast in week 4. But I did clean up my diet in other ways with the help of my fellow participants.
What’s the yoga commitment like?
We commit to practicing asana (yoga poses) 6 days a week. The program outlines a home practice, so you’re free to go through the postures at home for either entire program or a part of it – it’s up to you! You are encouraged to take advantage of the discount offered for unlimited studio yoga.
What’s the diet commitment like?
Week 1: Notice what you eat and document how it makes you feel.
Week 2: Transition to whole, unprocessed foods.
Week 3: Cut out/ reduce refined sugar.
Week 4: Three-day, all fruit cleanse.
Weeks 5-6: Continue with the adjustments made in the first four weeks.
Throughout the program, the most important aspect is being mindful of what you consume and how it makes you feel.
What’s the meditation commitment like?
We meditate daily on our own, starting with five minutes per day and then gradually increasing in five minute increments week by week (up to 30 minutes per day by week six).
What’s the reading and journaling commitment like?
Each week, we read about ten pages on a weekly theme. At the end of the reading, there are some excavating questions that require you to take a look at your own life and discern how the theme applies to you.
What’s the group meeting commitment like?
When: Sunday from 3:00 – 4:00 pm
Where: Hot Yoga Plus
We’ll discuss last week’s theme in a big group first, and get some practical suggestions for places in your life to bring out that week’s theme (vitality, centering, restoration, etc.). Then, we’ll divide into smaller groups and have a more in-depth discussion. Finally, we’ll come back together as a large group to discuss the coming week. After the group meetings, there are two optional yoga classes you could choose to attend: a power flow or a hot 26 fusion.
